Job Type
Full Time - Fixed Term Contract

Economists play a central role in setting Ofcom's strategic direction, developing and applying regulatory policy, promoting competition and carrying out market investigations. We apply economic thinking to problems in a range of dynamic, high-profile markets which are of considerable importance to the UK economy

Our summer internships are aimed at those interested in Ofcom’s work. They will give you experience of what it is like to be on our Graduate Economist Scheme and an insight into the career of an applied economist.

Ofcom has one of the largest competition and regulatory economics teams in the UK, with more than 60 economists working on issues related to the BBC, TV, radio and video-on-demand sectors, broadband, landlines, mobiles and postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate.

Our work involves many stakeholders and uses a range of skills. For example, you might be working in a team that:

  • Uses behavioural economics to understand how people buy communication services and make it easier for them to switch mobile provider
  • Assesses the potential positive and negative impact on the media sector of BBC services such as new TV channels and apps
  • Analyses competitive conditions in broadband markets using applied industrial organisation theory, and identify ways to address market power and promote competition
  • Provides financial insight and economic modelling to help maintain the regulatory regime which secures the provision of the universal postal service
  • Adopts some of the principles of game theory and auction theory to inform the best ways to allocate portions of the airwaves over which wireless devices (such as mobiles) operate
  • Designs and interprets consumer surveys to understand what people want from their services
  • As an intern you will be working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams to help ensure our policies have a sound economic foundation and deliver a real, long term benefit to consumers.
