Overview

Communications play a crucial role in the lives of UK citizens and consumers, and as the sector regulator Ofcom exists to make these markets work for everyone. Economics is central to our role.

As an Ofcom Economist you will be involved in the issues straight away, formulating policy options and helping reach robust decisions. You will start a rewarding career in a vital and dynamic sector and have opportunities to learn in a supportive environment.

Responsibilities

Ofcom has one of the largest competition and regulatory economics teams in the UK, with more than 60 economists working on issues related to the BBC, TV, radio and video-on-demand sectors, broadband, landlines, mobiles and postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate.

Our work involves many stakeholders and uses a range of skills. For example, you might be working in teams that:

  • Use behavioural economics to understand how people buy communication services and make it easier for them to switch mobile provider
  • Assess the potential positive and negative impact on the media sector of BBC services such as new TV channels and apps
  • Analyse competitive conditions in broadband markets using applied industrial organisation theory, and identify ways to address market power and promote competition
  • Provide financial insight and economic modelling to help maintain the regulatory regime which secures the provision of the universal postal service
  • Adopt some of the principles of game theory and auction theory to inform the best ways to allocate portions of the airwaves over which wireless devices (such as mobiles) operate
  • Design and interpret consumer surveys to understand what people want from their service

As a graduate economist, you will be working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams from day one to help ensure our policies have a sound economic foundation and deliver a real, long term benefit to consumers. Your personal development is also important to us, so you will also receive support and training as you grow in your role.

During your two years on the programme, we offer four six-month placements moving between projects, industry sectors and teams within Ofcom, to ensure that the competition, consumer and regulatory issues that you are exposed to is as broad as possible. Potential placements could be in Competition Economics, Financial Economics, Media Team, Spectrum, Consumer, and the Strategy Team – but irrespective of the placement, you will get to make real contributions from the start.
